4 Questions To Ask When Renting A Self-Storage Unit

Posted on

Are you considering storing some of your personal things in a storage unit? If so, you are not the only person who turns to self-storage units when you need space to store things. Many people do this, but you should know that you will have options when renting one. Self-storage facilities offer various sizes of units and other options, and you might want to ask the following four questions to make sure you pick the right one.

What Sizes Do You Offer, and Which Should You Pick?

One good question to start with is about the sizes of units the facility offers. Most facilities offer several options in size, and you will want to pick the right one. How do you know what size to choose? You can ask the property manager to help you determine the answer to this question. You can tell them what you would like to store and how much stuff you have. You can also inquire about the prices of the units. Based on this information, the manager might suggest one or two different options. You can then choose the one you feel is the best for you.

Do You Require a Long-Term Lease?

The second question to ask is if they require a long-term lease to rent a self-storage unit. In most cases, the answer is no. Most property managers of self-storage units offer month-to-month leases, which means that you only need to obligate yourself to one month at a time. If you decide to vacate the unit, you can let them know that you no longer need it. They might require a 30-day notice, but you can ask to find out for sure.

Is There Security on the Premises?

The next thing to ask about is the security on the premises. Is there security? Do they have cameras? Is there someone monitoring the property? You can ask these things to make sure your things will be safe if you store them there.

Are There Items You Cannot Store There?

You might also want to ask if there are things you cannot store in the unit. The property manager can give you a list of things you cannot store there or might describe them to you.

These are four good questions to ask when renting a self-storage unit. You might have others, too. If you are ready to rent a unit, contact a local storage unit property manager to learn more.
